"Vocally versatile, musically astute..." LA Times"
"One of the brightest stars in the ... opera constellation" Devon Daily
Lesley Garrett is one of the few sopranos who has successfully bridged
the gap from stage to recording artist. She has established herself as non-traditional
operatic performer. Her recordings have often crossed over into the pop market. Ms.
Garrett is a fervent campaigner to make opera accessible to all and has won fans from both
sides of the Atlantic.
Born
and educated in the UK, Lesley completed her education at the National
Opera Studio and is now a fellow at the Royal Academy of Music where she studies with Joy
Mammen.
Lesley's career began with engagements including the Westford Festival, Welsh National
Opera North, the Buston Festival and Glyndebourne. In 1984 she became a member of the
English National Opera having previously appeared there as guest.
In 1995, Ms. Garrett made her successful debut recital tour of the United States. She then
returned to the UK for the broadcast of her first BBC TV Special, Viva La Diva, a program
featuring popular operatic arias which was nominated in the music category at the 1996
Montreaux Festival.
She has made four solo recordings of popular arias: Diva! A Soprano At the Movies (SSD
1007) and Prima Donna (SSD1023) - both were in the American Classical Crossover charts and
the UK Classical and Pop charts for many months. Simple Gifts (SILKD 6004), which was
released world wide in 1994, entered straight into the Top Ten of the classical charts. A
Soprano in Red (SILKD 6008), hit the Top 50 Pop Album chart in the UK and remained at the
number 1 position in the Classical Artist Album chart for several months.
In the fall of 1996, Ms. Garrett released her stunning album, Soprano in Hollywood (SILKD
6013). Her fifth record for Silva Classics was something of a departure for the opera
singer. The recording features songs from the 1930's and 1940's - The Golden Age of
The Hollywood Musical. Timeless classics by Rodgers & Hart, Victor Herbert, Jerome
Kern, Cole Porter and George Gershwin bring back the glamour and mood of pre and post war
Hollywood - all given the unique Garrett touch.
