Schools are listed under local authority areas and ranked on the percentage of eligible pupils reaching at least Level 4 of the  national curriculum in last summer's tests. Schools with fewer than ten candidates are excluded from the tables so as not to identify individual pupils. All the schools listed are in the state system: preparatory school are not required to sit the tests or publish results.

Children are eligible to sit the tests in the final year of primary school. Most are 11 years old, but some are ten. The Government calculates the percentage reaching Level 4 on the basis of all eligible pupils, whether or not they actually took the tests. Absentees and those 'disapplied' in individual subjects are included.

The school score is an aggregate of the percentages reaching Level 4 (the expected standard for an 11-year-old) in English, maths and science. The preceding two years' figures are given to measure schools' improvement.
