Smugglers
Cottage was built around 1780 on farmland belonging to
Ramsgate Dairy. The construction of the roadway came some time later
and at the time of
being made a
thoroughfare
it was made much wider than any other street so it was appropriately named
Broad St.
Smugglers
Cottage is a Georgian brick built Grade II listed cottage, seated in a
small side street, a short distance from the magnificent Grade l
listed
St George's Church and it's lovely grounds which are open
to the public. The cottage was built around 1780, later gaining
the name "Smugglers Cottage" which was not surprising as the area
was renowned for its history of smuggling. It was allegedly built by a sea
captain, who used to sail regularly from Ramsgate Harbour. He
eventually settled here and had the cottage built, some time later
the cottage gained it's name.
Smugglers Cottage contains four tastefully furnished and decorated double bedrooms. In addition there are two bathrooms on the
1st floor. One containing a three piece suite consisting of a full size
bath, pedestal wash-basin and a wc, the second bathroom contains a walk in
shower with a Grohe power shower in place of the bath, wash-basin and wc.
Another utility is contained on the lower ground floor consisting of a
wash-basin and wc. A walk in electric shower is also on the lower
ground floor. The 4th bedroom on the lower ground floor is used as a children's playroom and study and as such contains a computer, 21" TV (used mainly for playstation use), comfortable chairs, a pedestal desk and of course many toys.

The house is centrally-heated and
most suited to a non smoking family containing a maximum of three adults and 2-3 young children. The accommodation is arranged over three floors
connected by a charming wooden staircase. The cottage has been sensitively
modernised, with a fully fitted kitchen and dining room with the
original polished floorboards, a charming reception room, also
containing the original polished floorboards, all of which are
complemented by tasteful, coordinating furnishings and a large
number of quality oil
and watercolour paintings which adorn the walls throughout the
cottage. The sitting room is equipped with a television, video recorder
and a stereo/cd system and telephone. Television/videos are also in three of the bedrooms. The
playroom contains a range of children's toys and a basic computer suitable
for children's games play and letter writing.
Laundry needs are catered for in the adjoining utility room which contains
a range of useful kitchen floor and wall units, a double sink with hot and
cold water as well as a new Servis washing machine and ample room for drying clothes. Adjacent to the utility area is
a storage area for bicycles and prams. The Utility room is
accessed from the
courtyard. The
pebbled courtyard contains garden furniture and a built in barbeque and is
completely surrounded by an 18' foot high wall covered in foliage with no direct access to the street,
so is safe for children to play in unattended. The courtyard is completely lit up at night. Many birds nest in the foliage so the garden is filled with birdsong around 4pm each day.
Having the
virtue of a grade II listing and being in a conservation area the
house enjoys relative peace and quiet with cars not being
permitted to park outside, unless unloading, until after 6pm and
not after 8am in the morning, but off street parking
exists for 4 vehicles within 10 metres of the front door of the
cottage and further parking is available within 50 metres.
Contrasting with Broad Street, a short walk through the charmingly
named 'Pig Alley' brings you to the hustle and bustle of the
Town's pedestrianised shopping area with Marks & Spencer,
Woolworth's, Argos and all the usual high street banks and
building societies present, you will also find shops for all
tastes and pockets and a Saturday market is to be found close by
as well. Large Tesco's, Sainsbury's, Alders and a host of other
similar type stores are within a 5-10 minute drive from the
cottage,
For those who enjoy walking there are several National Trust
coastal walks with quite spectacular view or a visit at low tide
to Ramsgate's beaches, where countless rock pools teaming with
marine life, including crabs, shrimps and anemones are to be
found.
The cottage was purchased in 2001 as school holiday retreat for the
children as they love the seaside. A considerable amount of time
and energy has been spent refurbishing it, whilst ensuring the
original charm and character were retained. The tranquil setting
combined with the high standard of the accommodation makes this a
truly delightful holiday home.
Weekly bookings and short breaks are available all year, phone for
