On first
impression you might just walk on past the Artillery' - but you'd be
missing one of those rare pubs in which you could take root and
stay....and stay! You're truly welcomed as you come through the door, both
by Tony and his friends at the bar, many of whom travel long distances to
enjoy the beer and the company
Tony
spent 12 years with the Army (R.T.R), after which he served 22 years with
the Met. Police. With pensions from both and now at 50+ he's running the
pub as his hobby and with all the care and attention you'd expect from a
hobbyist (his other past-times are his '97 Harley Road King! and American
Civil War re-enactment with the Southern Skirmish Association)
The pub itself
was built back in 1810 and owned by two spinsters who decided to sell beer
from their parlour to support the thirst of the 'gay blades' (in the
Biblical sense!) of the locally based Royal Hussars, among others. Later,
these respectable old dears employed younger ladies who satisfied other
appetites in the upstairs rooms; no doubt many a good night was enjoyed by
Hussars polishing their swords...
A
fascinating feature of the Artillery Arms are the stained glass windows.
Dating back to 1850 they are true originals and to give some idea of their
significance they are insured for £30,000. Depicting scenes of foot
soldiers, cavalry and cannon these are real works of art which you must
see!
Food?
Yes, but no hot meals; nor is there lap-dancing, Karaoke or any themed
nonsense! Sandwiches only but they're well packed doorsteps made in-house
and excellent value at only £1-a-go. Anyway, you come here to drink and to
enjoy it! Not a children's' pub this, it's for the parents only!
..to sum
it all up - if you enjoy a 'real' pint in a proper pub you can't fail to
appreciate the genuineness of it all..
